Don't have enough time to walk the entire Camino de Santiago? Join this San Sebastián tour to get a taste of 'The Way' in a day. Hike a stunning stretch of coastline, cross an inlet by boat, then kick back in a bar with a wine in hand.

Please note: This is a 8.5 km hike, designed to take three hours with an extra two hours at the end to enjoy the town of Pasaia and come back to San Sebastián by public bus. You’re walking up a steep hill at the beginning that lasts for 1.5 km. The terrain isn’t rocky but there are lots of steps to climb! The rest of the hike lasts for 7 km and while it is more moderate, you need to navigate your way across a few rocks, which can be challenging for some. During each section, the total gain of altitude is about 180 m (360 m in total).

This hike is not recommended for those suffering from heart problems or high blood pressure and should be avoided by those with hip or knee replacements or anyone who is afraid of heights. Please contact us if you have any concerns regarding the physical requirements of the San Sebastián hiking tour; private tours are available for those looking for a slower pace.

(Please be prepared for a steep beginning — but we promise it gets easier as you go! There are several ups and downs along the route, but the hardest part is at the start). As you continue your Basque adventure, your local guide highlights points of interest and gives you all the insider knowledge you need to know, knowledge that only a local would know!

As we continue our San Sebastián walking tour, we make our way to the lighthouse of La Plata and from there we head down the hill to Pasaia San Pedro. Here, we discover some unique cultural traditions and customs before embarking on a boat across the sea inlet. Breathe in the fresh air as your local guide tells you about the phenomenal scenery.

We enjoy more wicked views of the mountains and coast before coming to rest on the terrace of a bar in the beautiful port-side Santiago Square. After taking a moment here to soak up your surroundings and indulge in txakoli (regional white wine), we wander the narrow streets of Pasaia, before returning to San Sebastián by public transport. Our guide, Ainhoa, was enthusiastic and knowledgeable. It was pretty strenuous (unless you’re in good shape), with a lot of uphill portions. Great views of San Sebastian and the coast.

Mrs. Jennifer I. from United Arab Emirates travelled on 10 Jun 2017:

Oihana was delightful & a wealth of information both historic & recent on Basque culture!

Ainhoa was a fantastic, enthusiastic guide. Highly recommended!

Mr. Lee L. from Australia travelled on 14 Apr 2017:

We highly recommend this hike (coincidentally a small section of it is part of the Northern El Camino trail). Our guide Oihana Guillan was excellent. She was very knowledgeable, friendly and professional. We highly recommend her service.

Ms. Maren W. from USA travelled on 01 Feb 2017:

We had a GREAT time overall. BUT.. It was not very clear on the tours description exactly how much of the tour would be hiking… I loved it but my 60 year old mother was not prepared for that. Though she did admit it was all worth it in the end! It would be good to further describe the amount of uphill hiking the tour actually is.

Mr. Gareth Y. from North Ireland travelled on 31 Aug 2016:

Fantastic tour with such a wonderful guide, Maria.
The perfect blend of activity, fun, history and scenery.
Maria had a great personality and our small group hit it off from the start, the only issue we had was that we ran out of time to keep talking!! 🙂
The local knowledge of our guide was really appreciated and she spent lots of time at the end of the tour providing additional local information and recommendations for us to enjoy the remainder of our stay.
We would highly recommend this tour and will definitely repeat it on our return to San Sebastian.
    Go raibh maith agat Maria!

Mr. DOMINIC M. from Australia travelled on 29 Aug 2016:

Really impressed with the tour, Oihana (hope I spelt that right), provided a really amazing insight into Basque culture while doing a really great walk through the country side down to a small town I would never have thought to have visited. The only tip I’d give for others booking is that you don’t really see much of a view of San Sebastian – but you don’t need to with the natural cliffs and lush scenery. Really glad I did this!

Ms. Tziona K. from USA travelled on 29 Aug 2016:

Oihnah was awesome! Such a fun day!

Mr. Ryan R. from USA travelled on 20 Jul 2016:

Oihana was a great guide – knowledgeable and fun!

Ms. Allison H. from USA travelled on 15 Jul 2016:

My mother (late 50s), sister (early 20s), and I (late 20s) all took the tour with Maria – honestly, the best guide I’ve ever had (and I don’t say that lightly)! Maria went above and beyond in telling us about the history of Spanish and Basque culture, the history of San Sebastian, sharing stories from her childhood, and getting to all about us – all while hiking on this beautiful scenic path, that I would have never known about in San Sebastian. The hike itself is a bit challenging – we got sweaty, but we wanted the exercise and it was a great excuse to eat more pintxos that evening :). During our time together, Maria gave us several recommendations on other sights & food to experience, both in San Sebastian, as well as in her town of Zarautz, a short train ride away. We had 2 great days because of this wonderful hike and this amazing guide. Thank you Urban Adventures for such a treat!

Mr. Chris S. from Australia travelled on 06 Jun 2016:

Tomasz was a very enthusiastic, knowledgeable and entertaining guide. The scenery, hike and add-ons were all of a very high standard. The whole experience was faultless and even included a seamless transfer of the hike to the next day because of poor weather.

Mr. Terri D. from Australia travelled on 31 May 2016:

We throughly enjoyed our hike, it has been one of the highlights of our trip to spain. Maria was a great guide very knowledgeable and taught us a lot about the area and spain.

Mr. Frank G E. from USA travelled on 23 May 2016:

Didn’t do the St James way because of my illness that day. Did however do another tour with Thomasz 3 days later. It was superb and would recommend his services to Anyone!

Mr. Katie J. from Australia travelled on 15 May 2016:

Maria was excellent, we strongly recommend her. She went above and beyond giving us restaurant and additional sight seeing recommendations.

Mr. Karsten S. from Australia travelled on 28 Apr 2016:

Maria, our guide did an excellent job. We really did enjoy her company and our many discussions with her on all kind of topics. Thanks Maria for a great hike and a great day!! Best regards Karsten and Dorte from Denmark

Ms. carolyn b. from New Zealand travelled on 01 Feb 2016:

We had wanted to do some of the St James Way walk around or near San Sebastián as our time in northern Spain was limited. I found Urban Adventures on TripAdvisor and spotted the tour ‘Hiking the St James Way’. This sounded perfect, setting out from San Sebastián up and over the Ulia Mountain finishing in the beautiful seaside village of Pasaia. Tomasz was our guide for this hike and for us, he was an inspiration. Coupled with that, Tomasz’s sense of humour, his local knowledge both historical and current enabled us to gain an understanding of the Basque culture and the importance of it to the people. The hike was relaxing with a number of short stops to look at the incredible views of the ocean or to gather more information. The walk culminated in Pasaia with a short boat trip to Pasaia San Juan; a walk through a narrow medieval type street with a coffee and tortilla potato in the piazza. Afterwards, we caught a bus back to San Sebastián when there was enough time to explore some of his recommended plans. Thank you Tomasz for an unforgettable experience!

Mr. Yin C. from Australia travelled on 15 Nov 2015:

Tomasz is an excellent guide and made the hike an experience to remember. I would highly recommend this to anyone that will be visiting San Sebastian

Mrs. Raysa P. from USA travelled on 23 Sep 2015:

Maria was a wonderful guide. She was sensitive to our needs and encouraging when the hike was hard. It was great that she was able to speak English and explain about the culture, history and give us information about el Camino de Santiago. We enjoyed her company and the trip.

Mrs. Judith R. from Australia travelled on 23 Aug 2015:

We loved our evening Pinxthos tour with the amazing Thomasz in San Sebastian during
June this year. We went to places that we would never have found by ourselves and ate many different pinxthos teamed with a vatiety of beverages . Thomasz is an excellent guide, funny, intellegent and able to blend a mixture of people into a cohesive group. Do this tour and you will also agree.

Mr. Gordon H. from New Zealand travelled on 23 Jul 2015:

Was suggested and booked through our Intrepid guide in San Sebastian

Mr. Emily-Ann E. from Australia travelled on 02 Jul 2015:

We decided to do the St James Way Adventure after reading all of the other great reviews for it and we weren’t disappointed! Our guide Maria was fantastic, giving us a great mixture of the history and culture of the area, along with her own stories. It was such a personal tour and was really fun. The walk itself is along a beautiful stretch of cliff and it was nice to bump into the more serious Camino walkers along the way. I’d definitely recommend this tour to other visitors!

Mr. Susan S. from Australia travelled on 14 Oct 2014:

Amaia, our guide was an absolute delight and even stopped on the way and produced a picnic from her backpack. Even the fact that it poured with rain did not dampen the experience. I would thoroughly recommend this tour it was a wonderful 6 hours, well spent.

Mr. Adrian G. from Spain travelled on 10 Oct 2013:

Highly recommended. Meet pilgrims doing the “camino”, get to see the green Basque cliffs, explore amazing cute fishing villages, taste Basque gastronomy with Txakoli wine from Getaria… all by the hand of an awesome tour guide.

Ms. Bethany H. from North Ireland travelled on 16 Sep 2013:

Absolutely amazing day – weather was nice, scenery was stunning and our guide Amaia was so lovely and knowledgeable. I can’t recommend this highly enough!

Mrs. Suzanne P. from New Zealand travelled on 05 Aug 2013:

Tomasz and Amaia were a guides fo this beautiful walk that I opted to do and thoroughly enjoyed. Following from of the pi
Homage track and seeing many pilgrims along th way was great. I learned a lot about the Basque people and way of life as well seeing San Sebastian at its best, the walk was varied in landscape and terrain, beautifi
Views and a real calm and serenity yet so clost to a busy bustling shoreline. It was one of highlights in my visit to Spain and would recommend it to anyone who appreciate getting out of the city and
Earning more about the history of the people and the area.

Mr. Anthony G. from USA travelled on 04 Aug 2013:

While in San Sabastian I decided to do the Pinxto tour and the St. James Way hike. Both were top notch primarily because of the guides Tomasz and Amia who were excessively concerned with everyone’s “happiness.”
St. James Way: gorgeous hike along the coastal cliffs so obviously awesome views. Guides were the same and even more concerned that everyone was having a good time. The hike is only steep for the first 15-20 minutes. At that point it is a mostly shading easy, though long, walk. Lunch was included in ending spot Pasai which is beyond charming. Hard to describe. The highlight however are the informative small speeches given by Tomasz and Amia. Their passion and wealth of knowledge are priceless. I can’t emphasize that enough. When you make a reservation request them as your guides.

Ms. Rebecca K. from travelled on 23 Jul 2013:

This day trip with Urban Adventures was a highlight of my time in San Sebastián. Thomasz our tour guide was hilarious and made the whole experience so enjoyable with his interesting ‘speeches’ along the way. The hike was incredible and I would highly recommend this if you are visiting San Sebastián. The views were amazing and I was so excited to actually be walking on part of the famous pilgrimage path. It was really cool to see the pilgrims hiking past with their shells attached. I loved the lunch stop which included tasty food (including vegetarian – which I am!) and more delightful views. If you’re in San Sebastián don’t miss this opportunity!

Ms. Aline V. from Belgium travelled on 10 Jul 2013:

The UA St James Way in San Sebastian was extremely fun and informative. This on top of it taking place in a stunning environment of wild coastline and beautiful villages at Pasaia, just made it a fantastic day out in the San Sebastian area, learning heaps about the locals and their ways. I’ll sure be remembering all the anecdotes as Tomasz and his wife Amaia are great fun to be around and make any bit of information interesting in their “little speeches”! Highly recommended for those who want to know more about the Basque culture and customs, and like a bit of excercise in the great outdoors.
